PMJAY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana)
PMJAY (Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana), also known as Ayushman Bharat Yojana, is a flagship health insurance scheme launched by the Government of India in 2018 under the Ayushman Bharat Mission. It aims to provide financial protection for healthcare to economically weaker sections of society and is the largest health assurance scheme in the world. The program provides health coverage of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to over 10.74 crore poor and vulnerable families (approximately 50 crore beneficiaries) that form the bottom 40% of the Indian population.
On September 11, 2024, the Union Cabinet approved a major expansion of PMJAY.
All senior citizens aged 70 and above will now receive health coverage, regardless of their income.
This decision ensures even greater inclusivity for vulnerable sections of society, further strengthening the scheme’s reach and impact.
